Every once in a while I find a product that I like to share with readers. While at the Natural Food Expo West this year, I ran into a product that looked like it had some great potential to help people fight their sugar cravings and addiction. As most of you know, I discuss sugar and sugar addiction in-depth in my book: The Simple Life Guide To Optimal Health: How to Get Healthy, Lose Weight, Reverse Disease and Feel Better Than Ever
The company I found is called Lakanto. Lakanto makes a great monk fruit-based sweetener that has zero calories and doesn’t negatively impact your blood sugar… sounds great to me.! Of course, I took some samples and tried it out myself, and think it is a great product for the Primal, Paleo and health community in general. Heath Squier of Julian Bakery was also with me, and found the product as amazing as I did. Matter of fact Lakanto sweetener is included in his new low carb cookie and brownie products. I must, I couldn’t tell the difference between Julian Bakery’s low carb cookie and brownie from the sugar-loaded version in grocery stores. They are incredibly tasty but remember they are still a cookie and brownie so don’t be scarfing them down like an out of control hungry caveman. Remember my famous saying “An organic cookie is still a cookie.”
Here is my disclaimer: I do not receive any compensation from Lakanto, I only share these products, as they are ones I truly believe in and use myself. Sad I have to even say that, but in today’s world of product pushers, I have to. As most of you know, especially those who have met me, nothing get’s in this blog that I don’t use myself. Matter of fact, I usually find the products on my own and once they are thoroughly tested, and are a permanent fixture in my life, I then pass them on to you. I will tell you this, not many people do that these days.
Now back to Lakanto! Here is some information below about the product and what it is all about.
Lakanto – Zero Calorie Sweetener
Whether you are a hardcore Primal/Paleo follower or just experimenting, one thing is for sure: you have to cut out processed sugar. Our ancestors didn’t have constant access to sugar-filled treats, remember they had found those berries and honey, and they were not easy to find!– They had very limited access to sweets, and our bodies are not adapted to deal with the huge amounts of sugar found in the Standard American Diet. Artificial sweeteners are even worse, now linked to weight gain, cancer, and toxic side effects.
I recently became acquainted with Lakanto, an all-natural, non-GMO monk fruit-based sweetener. It tastes just like sugar and you use it just like sugar, only it has zero calories and zero glycemic index.
It comes in two forms, Lakanto Golden, which is like zero-calorie brown sugar, and Lakanto White, which tastes and works almost exactly like regular sugar. Lakanto tastes a lot better than all the other monk fruit and stevia-based sweeteners market.
- All-Natural Sweeteners
- ZERO Calories
- ZERO Glycemic Index
- ZERO Impact on Blood Sugar or Insulin
- ZERO Bitter or Chemical Aftertaste
- ZERO GMOs, Additives or Artificial Flavors
- Vegan, Kosher & Paleo
What’s Monk Fruit?
Monk Fruit is a fruit that comes from the pristine mountain regions of China. It’s all the rage these days, with companies like billion-dollar Zevia and even Coke moving to Monk Fruit as their main natural sweetener of choice.
Why? Because unlike most fruits, whose sweetness comes from fructose, Monk Fruit’s sweetness comes from natural mogrosides that are 300 times sweeter than sugar, but aren’t metabolized for energy in the body and elevate blood sugar or insulin.
Our Ancestors Hardly Ate Sugar
Paleolithic humans had limited access to sweetness: honey and seasonal fruits. Our bodies and minds evolved powerful pleasure-reward mechanisms to ensure we ate as much sugar as possible when it was available to ensure we got maximum energy. This once-helpful adaptation is now a horrible problem – sugar is one of the most addictive foods on the planet.
What Makes a Paleo Sweetener?
The Primal/Paleo lifestyle is all about eating foods that our bodies are adapted to digest optimally.
What’s in Lakanto? Monk Fruit extract and non-GMO Erythritol.
Monk fruit is certainly Primal and Paleo. As for Erythritol, even though it’s not usually found in pure form, it’s in all sorts of foods that our ancestors ate, especially fruits and mushrooms. Our bodies are adapted to handle Erythritol easily – it passes through without being metabolized for energy. 90% of it gets peed out and the remaining 10% turns into harmless gases and short-chain fatty acids in the large intestine.
The vast majority of people have no issues digesting it. This is not the case for artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which is very new and toxic to our bodies, or natural sweeteners like agave, which is concentrated fructose that can overload our livers or sugar alcohols like xylitol.
Lakanto is a great choice for people who want to lose weight or control their blood sugar. It tastes great, and you can use it in all your cooking, baking and drink recipes just like sugar.
