Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on Earth, the use as a food source dates all the way back to 9th century Chad, and it is believed spirulina was used by the Aztecs in 16th-century Mexico.

Considered one of the world’s best “Super Foods,” spirulina contains several important nutrients. Spirulina is a natural food providing highly bio-available Beta-carotene, B vitamins, iron, essential fatty acids, and protein all packed into each serving of this green “Super Food.” Spirulina has an incredible level of protein it’s 50 to 70 percent protein by weight, which is even more than red meat (27% protein). Spirulina also contains all of the essential amino acids (key to building and repairing muscle) and 10 of the 12 non-essential amino acids.

Spirulina has a wide variety of health benefits that impact virtually every area of your body. For example, spirulina shows great potential for people with cardiovascular disease, by creating better lipid profiles, controlling hypertension, and increasing blood vessel elasticity.

Animal studies suggest spirulina can protect your liver, because of its high level of antioxidants, and its ability to produce or release nitric oxide, which helps blood flow. In a study of three antioxidant-rich diets containing spirulina, blueberries, and spinach, spirulina was found to have the highest neuroprotective effect, probably due to its ability to nullify free radicals and reduce inflammation.

Spirulina has also been shown to benefit such wide-ranging from allergies to arsenic poisoning. According to one study, patients treated with spirulina reported relief of symptoms commonly associated with allergic rhinitis, such as nasal discharge and congestion, sneezing, and itching.

Spirulina can come from numerous sources; I chose the superior source that is certified organic under 3 major organic standards:

  • OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association) — one of the world’s oldest, largest, and most trusted leader in the Organic Certification Industry
