Here’s the bottom line: Cows are not designed to eat grains, corn, and soy as their principal ration, if at all. This type of CAFO-driven diet makes them sick and is why cows on large-scale, commercial farms usually require large doses of antibiotics to suppress their symptoms of poor health.
Cows are designed to eat grass, period. The rumen (the largest compartment of a cow’s four-part stomach) is where ingested grass is broken down by bacteria that naturally live in the cow’s gut.
These same bacteria are not, however, efficient at breaking down the grains, corn, and soy products that the modern cow consumes today. The grains also alter the pH (acid/base balance) of the bovine rumen, preventing normal digestive function.
Making matters worse, the corn and soy that is fed to most commercially farmed cows are nearly always genetically modified (GMO).
