Product Review: Organic Hunza Sweet Apricot Kernels (RAW)

While walking the aisles at my local healthy food store Jimbo’s, something looking like a bag of almonds caught my eye, as I love organic almonds. To my surprise the label said “Hunza Sweet Apricot Kernals.” Hmmm, now that sounds interesting and different, as IGary's Health Tips Product Review Organic Hunza Apricot Kernels had never heard of them before. After reading the label (As you all know I recommend doing so no matter what the product is) I decided to give this new little treat a try. As we all know finding those easy to carry healthy snacks is always a challenge and you can only eat so many almonds in a day. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised, as I was not sure what to expect from this new found food. The Hunza Sweet Apricot Kernels, have a slight sweet taste and do taste somewhat like an apricot. The consistency and texture of the kernel is pretty much the same as an almond, but just with a different taste.

The price is not too bad at $5.99 and you can buy them and other tasty snacks at www.gohunza.com, if you cannot find them in your local grocery or health food store.

I’m now hooked and have incorporated Organic Hunza Sweet Apricot Kernels into my between meals snack. They go really well with some sliced cheese and berries.

I give this tasty snack a Primal Power Method thumbs up!

Taking Multi-Vitamins Found to Reduce Cancer

A just-released study of nearly 15,000 men over the age of 50 suggests that taking a daily supplemental multi-vitamin could reduce rates of cancer by about eight percent. Dr. Michael Gaziano, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “Our study shows a modest but significant benefit in cancer prevention.”
New American Nutrition Vitamins

So if a multivitamin prevents cancer because it provides a mix of nutrients similar to food, why not just eat more fruits and vegetables? Diets high in fruits and vegetables have been shown in observational studies to reduce the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Sadly only 1.5 percent of the public gets the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables, according to Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center.

Healthy Product Recommendation: So Delicious Coconut Milk

I often get asked what is the best milk alternative for people who are lactose intolerant, or have difficulty consuming dairy products. For me the the best alternative is coconut milk, and I consider it also to be the healthiest option for people looking to lose weight. I use USDA Certified Organic So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk. So Delicious Coconut Milk comes in original, unsweetened, vanilla and chocolate. I use So Delicious Coconut Milk almost everyday in my  protein drinks.

Here is my favorite post workout recovery protein drink recipe:

  • 1-2 scoops of protein powder of your choice.
  • 1/4 -1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  • A dash of nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon of almond butter
  • 1/2 whole pealed banana
  • 6-8 ounces of So Delicious Coconut Milk (Vanilla or Plain).
  • 2-4 ounces of water until you get consistency you prefer.

Getting Nourished: A Conversation With Author Sally Fallon

1) What began your journey into traditional/holistic nutrition?

I’ve always liked to cook, but it all really started in the early 70s when I read Dr. Weston A. Price’s book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.  I decided to apply the principles outlined in Price’s book to my own family, and raised my children on a rich diet that included whole raw milk, butter, cream, meat, seafood and organ meat’s.  The result was that none of my children needed braces, even though I myself wore braces as a child. And they were much healthier than I had been as a child. Then, seeing these good results I had the idea to write a cookbook that incorporated Dr. Price’s principles. I started what was to become Nourishing Traditions in 1990 and the first edition was published in 1996.

2) What is the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) and how was it started?

The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity founded in 1999 to disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price, whose studies of isolated non-industrialized peoples established the parameters of human health and determined the optimum characteristics of human diets. Dr. Price’s research demonstrated that humans achieve perfect physical form and perfecthealth generation after generation only when they consume nutrient-dense whole foods and the vital fat-soluble activators found exclusively in animal fats. Giving Your Child A Head Start: The Importance Of Nutritional Imprinting

Nutritional ImprintingWhether early diet influences long-term health or achievement is a key question in the study of nutrition. Such long-term consequences would invoke the concept of nutritional imprinting, which is a process that can stimulate or retard future development at a critical period of a child’s life. Research from small mammals and primates shows that early nutrition may have potentially important long-term effects, for example on blood lipids, plasma insulin, obesity, atherosclerosis, behavior, allergies, learning, and very importantly, on influencing a child’s palate for future food selection.
