It’s important to strive for what is realistic rather than idealistic. In this spirit, The Simple Life Healthy Lifestyle Plan follows five truth-based, real-world principles designed to keep you on track. These form the practical foundation of The Simple Life concept as a whole, not just regarding health:
From time to time we all get off track in our quest for optimal health. I’m no different from you – this happens to me a couple times a year. Over the many decades of experimentation on my part, I have found a great way to burn some fat and at the same time perform a health re-boot. The best part? I have perfected this technique to only take 3 days!
Over the last ten days, I had an event and two birthdays to attend – not a good recipe for healthy eating. The event I attended wasn’t too bad, as I was able to eat a healthy meal before I went. What really got me were the two birthday parties. I went to both of those completely starved and ruined my finely-tuned diet. Now I wish everyone around me practiced the Primal/Paleo lifestyle, this way I would be eating Bison burgers and other healthy dishes at these parties. Unfortunately, my friends and family struggle with their health and eat poorly like so many other American’s today.
Needless to say I was surrounded by highly-processed sugary foods and there were no healthy alternatives. I could have just sucked it up and said no thanks and taken this as an opportunity to implement some periodic fasting. But when it comes to parties and special events I have a rule: sitting in the corner not enjoying yourself or not partaking in the festivities is something that I just do not believe in. I have been around people who do this at parties and it usually spurs questions like, “are you sick” or “are you on a diet.” More often than not, your refusal to at least eat some of the food or have a couple of drinks makes people uncomfortable and very self conscious about what they are eating and drinking.
You Primal guys and gals know; I just don’t think that being a party-pooper is a way to live your life. If you are following the Primal Power Method lifestyle, a majority of the time there is no reason why you can’t have some chicken wings, cake, or a couple adult beverages from time to time. The problem comes when this is how you eat all the time, not when you partake in this type of lifestyle a couple times a year.
So what do you do when this happens to you? Below, I outline a three day fat burning and health reboot that almost anyone can do. The best part you will not have to drink some concoction, promoted by some “B List” movie star or some supposed health expert. All you have to do is go straight up Primal!
Let’s get started!
The first thing I usually do when I first get home is drink a cup of non-caffeinated tea with some cinnamon. This works in two ways: 1. It helps settle your stomach after eating food stuffed with all the bad things we try and avoid. 2. The cinnamon helps dull the insulin response in order to hopefully store less fat. I have noticed it also helps me sleep a little better, compared if I just went straight to bed after a long day of gluttony.
I wake up and have a cup of green tea to give me a little energy and give my metabolism a boost (green tea is great for this). I skip breakfast, as I have plenty of empty calories already in my system, and go straight to the gym. I start my workout with a solid session of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). For those of you who haven’t heard of this type of training before, it is basically performing cardiovascular and strength training at the same time. The most common type of exercises used for HIIT are running, swimming or biking. You perform 7-10 reps of going all out for 30 seconds then taking it down to a moderate pace for 60-90 seconds and repeat. I plan to post a full article on HIIT training in the future.
I then perform my usual resistance training routine and call it a workout. Trust me you will be spent, but this is another great way to get those crucial growth and muscle repair hormones going.
I usually have my first meal of the day at lunch time. My meals will consist of pasture raised organic animal meats/organ meats (think liver), whole eggs, protein shakes (mixed with no carb coconut milk) and cheese. All my food is cooked with coconut oil. Basically I go completely carb free, except for a serving of Renewal Greens that contains the equivalent of one serving of fruits and vegetables. The Renewal Greens only has 7 grams of carbs, so my full day of carbs will usually be 15 grams or less. I have my last meal of the day by 7:00 pm, but I never ration myself during my meals I eat until I’m full and only when I’m hungry. Most of you will be surprised how long you will stay full on a high protein and fat meal. I go over this in great detail in my book the The Simple Life Guide To Optimal Health: How to Get Healthy, Lose Weight, Reverse Disease and Feel Better Than Ever
I kid you not it is that simple!
I start the day the same way I start off day 1: I drink a cup of green tea and go hit the gym. On this day I do not perform (HIIT) training, as I do not prescribe performing this training on consecutive days or more than three days a week. I eat just like day one by having my first meal around noon. Nothing changes as far as carbs either, just do as I outline above on day one. The only difference is for dinner I usually have a small salad or serving of vegetables with my main course of meat and fat. I do this in order to prime myself for the next day. Again I have my last meal at 7:00 pm.
Now for you newbies, or “Primal rookies,” this is where things get a little tough. Unlike day one and day two, I have breakfast at my normal time, which is about 30 minutes after waking. This will be a carb free meal except for the serving of Renewal Greens. I now go into 24 hour fast mode, as I do not workout on this day (but I do go for a walk in the evening). This means you will not eat or eat very little until breakfast the next day. The only thing I ingest is Organic India Tea (green or original) and water.
I have been performing fasting for years and I consider this to be something for the seasoned Primal follower. If you are new to fasting or have never performed it, you need to use extreme caution. Fasting is no big deal for people who are fat burners, but for most of the American’s today, who rely primarily on glucose derived from processed carbs and sugar as their daily fuel; this is a problem, as you will experience low blood sugar and could become dizzy, light headed, nauseated, or disoriented during fasting. If this happens you need to eat something immediately, such as an apple that contains natural sugars.
If you are inexperienced in fasting I recommend you start by trying shorter bouts of fasting until you can work up to the 24 hour period. This is not to say you have to eat absolutely nothing during these 24 hours, depending on how I feel, I may eat nothing, or have a couple pieces of organic cheese to curb any serious hunger pains. I end my fast by having a small protein shake with a scoop of Renewal Greens for breakfast the next morning. You want to eat something gentle and easy to digest when you break your fast, a couple eggs with some spinach is also a good.
